BURST

"BURST" is an experiment in implied narrativity through photography. Being attracted to classic movies of the 50s and 60s, I have always wanted to channel the monumental creativity the most famous directors present in their films.

Take Michelangelo Antonioni's "Blow-Up." The main thread of the plot centers around the protagonist piecing together a murder he believes he photographed--on one level, Antonioni was asking the audience what exactly a narrative is, and how we construct them. Ultimately, that's what "BURST" is all about--deconstructing my own narrative, poking holes in it, choosing what is important, and letting the viewer put it all back together again.

On an aesthetic level, "BURST" aims to create a feeling of nostalgia by evoking a sense of a 50s film. As such, every photo is "enhanced" in various analog ways: the prints have a more narrow range of values and are cropped to 16:9. In some cases, more extreme deformations have been made, including light leaks and cigarette burns. Frame numbers have been intelligently added to depict breaks in scenes, joined scenes and otherwise. Ultimately, I'm very happy with the work.
